Book Review — Kyland by Mia Sheridan

Dirt poor. Hillbilly. Backwoods hick. Mountain folk.

Tenleigh Falyn struggles each day to survive in a small, poverty-stricken, coal mining town where she lives with her sister and mentally ill mother. Her dream of winning the college scholarship given to one student by the local coal company and escaping the harshness of her life, keeps her going.

Kyland Barrett lives in the hills, too, and has worked tirelessly—through near starvation, through deep loneliness, against all odds—to win the Tyton Coal Scholarship and leave the town that is full of so much pain.

They’re both determined not to form any attachments, but one moment changes everything. What happens when only one person gets to win? When only one person gets to leave? And what happens to the one left behind?

Kyland is a story of desperation and hope, loss and sacrifice, pain and forgiveness, but ultimately, a story of deep and unending love.

WOW WOW WOW!!! Mia Sheridan has done it again. A perfect story about sacrifice, hope, courage and the true strength and meaning of love in all its forms.

I have been completely blown away by the power of this story. The underlying meaning behind every word written completely captivated me, drawing me in, making me feel absolutely everything these characters were feeling. Giving me a reading experience that I have never felt before.

Honestly, before reading any Mia Sheridan book, I always sit back and think about where she is going to take me this time. Ms Sheridan has a way of taking you on a journey of learning, of acceptance, of love. One that I always come out from feeling like I have become a better person because of it. That I have learned so much about something I knew nothing about.

Tenleigh Falyn and Kyland Barrett are two very unique characters that I have never come across before. Living in a rundown town situated in the Appalachia mountains, dirt poor, no where to go and nothing to look forward to. Until their only way out was to win the scholarship granted through their school. This was the one chance they had at making something of themselves. But there was only one winner. The other, stayed behind.

There was no room for distraction and defintely no time for romance as they both needed this ticket out of town to start a new life. This was their chance at a proper education, to make something of themselves. And nothing was standing in their way of that. Not even love.

“I’m going to leave here, Tenleigh. Nothing is going to stop me. Not you, not anything. Not anyone. Do you hear me? … I’m leaving this place behind when I go. Everything about this place. Even you.”

But the heart wants what the heart wants and no matter how hard they tried, their love went deeper than either of them ever imagined.

“I fell in love. Deep, hard, utter and complete love.”

It was so hard to see them go through what they had to. To fight against what they were feeling, knowing that one of them was leaving and never looking back. The emotions drawn out in this story were raw. It literally broke my heart in two. The love that Kyland had for Tenleigh was beautiful and pure. You could feel it through the pages like it was happening right in front of you.

“A look of peace came over Tenleigh’s face as she gazed at me, her lips parted, and for just one second, I almost couldn’t breathe. Did I think this girl was beautiful? I was wrong. She’s stunning.”

The selflessness of Tenleighs emotions were beautiful and unique to read. You could really feel that even though she really wanted that better life for herself and her family, she wanted the very best for Kyland also.

“I understood his need to make a life for himself somewhere that didn’t remind him of the deep pain he must have lived with all these years. And it made me want to love him.”

There was no way but to fall in love with Kyland. He was just so… wow. The scenes were beautiful when they were together, and hot when they were… together… 😉

And then came that part where you knew it couldn’t all be perfect. Something had to happy to ruin everything and then… BAM! It happens and your whole world just stops and you scream HOW WILL YOU FIX THIS!! FIX IT NOW!! …

BUT hang in there… I promise… It’s one of the most beautiful endings to a book that I have read in a very long time. I was reading through the last 30% so fast because I didn’t know how much longer my heart could take it.

You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone forever … I have loved none but you.”

Just. Beautiful. Everything about this book was incredible. The writing, the story, the characters, the hurt, the love and the sacrifice. Everything. Mia Sheridan can really do no wrong. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has read any other books of Mia’s or just someone looking for another epic love. You will find it here with Kyland and Tenleigh.

“…Go to hell. I do. Every day. For you.”
