BOOK REVIEW — Midnight Blue by LJ Shen

What do you get when you cross a foul-mouth, bad-boy, drug and alcohol addicted British rockstar with a gorgeously sweet, innocent, loyal, selfless and totally loveable ‘baby-sitter’ who must be at his side at all times to make sure he’s keeping clean?

One of the h.o.t.t.e.s.t rockstar romances to grace the pages of my eReader, that’s what.

This is not a light and fluffy read. It’s raw, dirty, sexy, filthy, honest, heartbreaking and so bloody addictive it had me glued to my seat until I was done. This book absolutely consumed me from start to finish.

“I’m getting us out of this mess.”
This was a promise I was going to keep.

Indie Bellamy is just your ordinary girl who’s trying to help her brother and his little family make ends meet after they lost their parents in a hit-and-run accident. Since then, her brother gave up is dream of playing in the NFL and has been spiralling out of control, turning to alcohol instead of his family as he tries to deal with his financial situation. Her 2 year old nephew is constantly ill, needing tubes for his ears, and they all live together in a one bedroom apartment because money has been extremely hard to come by.

When Indie is presented with a job opportunity to chaperone Alex Winslow, one of the hottest musicians on the planet on his latest world tour after he was released from rehab for an alcohol and drug addiction, it was a no brainer for Indie to take this job. It paid very well.

And her job was simple. Keep him clean for three months.

Alex Winslow was beautiful in a way storms where-only from afar. Just like them, he had the power to sweep and ruin you, two things I was too busy surviving to entertain.

Their relationship starts off rocky. They pretty much despise each other, which I love. I’m a total sucker for the ‘haters to lovers’ story. The tension between these two was one of the best things about this book for me. But Alex is so arrogant. He’s a dick to everyone he knows, so this was never going to be an easy task for Indie. But she slowly crawls under his skin and evidently drives him mad.

Alex originally decided that he just wanted to use her like the rest of them, but to his surprise, she became his muse for the tour and someone he couldn’t write music without. So in his eyes, Indie would help him write his album, he’d sleep with her and then get rid of her when he was done.

3 months.

Because Indie, like drugs, was a temporary fix. Once our three months were up, she’d leave my surly arse and run back to what was left of her dysfunctional-yet-loving family. I wouldn’t blame her. Hell, I wouldn’t even stop her. Because deep down, I knew a bastard like me couldn’t keep her.

LJ Shen has written an ‘epic rockstar romance’ in my eyes. I wasn’t sure what to expect before going into this one. I had never read this author before. I was in a bit of a book-funk and just opened the first page as it stared at me in my kindle library and before I knew it, I found myself 10 chapters in, clutching my heart and not wanting to let go. The emotions this book ripped out of me left me breathless at times. My heart pounding through 95% of this story.

If you love books like The Mighty Storm and Thoughtless (minus the love triangle), you will devour this one.

“Close your eyes,” he croaked.
“Because everything is so much more beautiful when you can’t see it.”

It’s safe to say that I will be searching high and low to find myself more stories that make me feel the way that Midnight Blue has. And LJ Shen has found herself a brand new reader for life <3

“I like to live on the edge.” He licked his lower lip.
“I like to live safely within the lines,” I retorted.
“It’s a comfortable place to be, but nothing ever grows there.”
