BOOK REVIEW: Give Me Strength by Kate McCarthy

Quinn Salisbury doesn’t think she’s cut out for this whole living thing. Even as a young girl she struggled. Just when she thinks she’s found a way to leave her violent past behind her, the only thing that’s kept her going is ripped away, leaving her damaged and heartbroken.

Four years later, she is slowly rebuilding her life and lands a job as an assistant band manager to Jamieson, the hot new Australian act climbing their way to the top of the charts. There she meets Travis Valentine, the charismatic older brother of her boss, Mac.

From his commanding charm to his confidence and passion, Travis is everything Quinn believes is too good for her, and despite her apprehension, she finds their attraction undeniable and intense.

When her past resurfaces, it complicates their relationship. Instead of reaching out for help, Quinn pushes Travis away, until a staggering secret is revealed that leaves her fighting for her very life.

Torn between running and opening her heart to the man determined to have her, can Quinn find the strength within herself to fight for her future?

Squeeeee!!!!!! Another winner in the Give Me Series!!! I just loooooooove these books.

I went straight into this book after finished Give Me Love which I loved so much, so my expectations for book 2 were way up there. And it did not disappoint.

Quinn is running from her life. Trying get away from the abusive relationship with her parents. After her boyfriend dies suddenly, his parents take her in until she is able to get her feet back on the ground. She moves into an apartment and there she meets her best friend Lucy and her husband Rick, who quickly become the most important people in her life. On a night out with Lucy, Quinn goes home with Travis for what she thought would be a one-night-stand. Later learning that her new job with Jamison as Mac’s assistant would land her a little too close to Travis, because he’s Mac’s brother.

Travis shows up in her life when she needs him the most, although she doesn’t see it that way. She doesn’t want him involved in anything or getting hurt. There is a twist in the story I didn’t see coming. It’s not overly huge, but it alters feelings and takes the story on more of a dramatic turn. Evidently, giving the story a hell of a roller coaster ride.

This book hit a deeper spot for me than book 1. I think the underlying story and the themes were a lot more emotionally charged. Kate is a wonderful writer and was able to bring these scenes to life in a way that made you not only think about Quinn, but about all the other people in the world who have gone through or who are going through the same things. It’s truly heartbreaking. Give Me Strength is jam packed full of drama and Quinn quickly becomes a member of the badass brigade with her chair throwing antics. Throughout the story you get both Quinn and Travis’ POV, which I love. Their chemistry is out of this world and knowing Travis’ feelings made the story flow so well.

I just love Travis. He is so manly, so sexy, so incredibly sweet.

“I watched you. From the moment you walked in that bar, I saw you. Amongst all the shallow and the fake, you looked like spring”

What broke my heart was that knowing Quinn was so damaged, she didn’t feel that she deserved Travis or everything that came with him, and that included his family. His crazy, always in your face, absolutely insane, family.

On a side note, I love Mac. I’m totally girl crushing on her. She is probably my favourite female character in this whole series. Kate has said that she will get her own book, so I am so excited about that!

Kate has such a way with words. I found myself laughing out loud and smiling like an idiot through most of this book. It’s cheeky, fun, hilarious and amazing.

This scene happened before anyone knew of Travis and Quinn’s night together.

Jake nudged my shoulder [Quinn]. “So who’s the guy?” Without taking my eyes from the screen, I said, “So what’s going on with you and Mac?” He patted me on the thigh.
“I’m glad we had this conversation.”
“Me too,” I muttered at his retreating back

Amongst the funny, this book was just so beautiful. Travis’ adoration for Quinn is so obvious it hurts! I found their relationship heartbreaking at times, but I was falling in love with the both of them from the very beginning. Kate has created tow characters that need each other more than they realise.

“I’m keeping you, you know that, right?”

Another thing I loved about this story was that I felt like I was learning things about love for the very first time myself. Kate told the story in such a way that I could feel myself going through everything with Quinn and learning with her along the way. My favourite quote about that was this:

“I wasn’t whole. I wasn’t sure I ever would be, but Travis loving me made me realise that no one ever really was. If we were, how did it explain the need for someone to fill us with their love?”

I am seriously so in love with this series. They are going down as one of my favourite book series ever. I read them and I feel like I’m hanging out with my friends. Definitely check this series out. It really has a bit of absolutely everything I love about reading!
