BOOK REVIEW: Fighting Redemption by Kate McCarthy

Fighting RedemptionRyan Kendall is broken. He understands pain. He knows the hand of violence and the ache of loss. He knows what it means to fail those who need you. Being broken doesn’t stop him wanting the one thing he can’t have; Finlay Tanner. Her smile is sweet and her future bright. She’s the girl he grew up with, the girl he loves, the girl he protects from the world, and from himself.

At nineteen, Ryan leaves to join the Australian Army. After years of training he becomes an elite SAS soldier and deploys to the Afghanistan war. His patrol undertakes the most dangerous missions a soldier can face. But no matter how far he runs, or how hard he fights, his need for Finlay won’t let go.

Returning home after six years, one look is all it takes to know he can’t live without her. But sometimes love isn’t enough to heal what hurts. Sometimes people like him can’t be fixed, and sometimes people like Finlay deserve more than what’s left.

This is a story about war and the cost of sacrifice. Where bonds are formed, and friendships found. Where those who are strong, fall hard. Where love is let go, heartache is born, and heroes are made. Where one man learns that the hardest fight of all, is the fight to save himself.

Ryan Kendall knows violence. Experiencing it first hand throughout his entire childhood, he understands what real pain is. From a small child he has felt helpless, unworthy and it has broken him, but it doesn’t stop him from wanting Fin. She is the girl he grew up with, she is his best friend’s sister. He has loved her since the beginning, he has always protected her, and he will continue to do so, even from himself.

Jake (Fin’s brother) and Ryan join the Australian Army and become SAS soldiers who are then deployed to Afghanistan. Ryan has dedicated himself protecting those who cannot protect themselves, but no matter how hard he tries to forget her or no matter how far away he may be, Fin is always on his mind.

Finlay Tanner – I love her character. Fin has been protected her whole life by her brother and Ryan. She has become successful in her career and is doing what she loves. Though, her love for Ryan has always been there in the back of her mind. She is a loyal, caring and absolutely stunning character. I kinda wish we were friends.

Ryan Kendall  is so completely broken. Not only is he freakin’ gorgeous, his goal in life is to protect those who are unable to do so themselves, he joins the army. He’s a spunk in uniform. That’ll do me. But he can’t seem to see that he deserves to be happy. I felt for Ryan with every single feeling in my bones. I cried for him, I worried for him and I fell in love with this broken soul.

It takes an incredibly talented author to write a story like this, and I search every. single. day. to find them. When I came across Fighting Redemption, I was even more excited when I noticed it was by Australian author Kate McCarthy, and being Australian myself, I had to read it. We have such incredible talent in this country and us Aussie’s need to stick together.

This is a story about war. It’s a story about love, loss, sacrifice and redemption and took my breath away.

“You’re the strongest person I’ve ever known, but someone smart and brave once told me that it’s always the strongest that fall the hardest. You can trust me, Ryan. Let go. I’ll be here to catch you. I’ll always be here.”

It’s heartbreaking, gut wrenching, incredibly deep with emotion and so well written. The whole story flowed so perfectly. I felt this story more than I ever thought I would. I really wasn’t prepared. Honestly, I hadn’t read any reviews. The cover sold it to me and the epilogue does enough to you to not want to put it down until you finish it, and that is exactly what I did.

“You’re all I see. Nothing holds more beauty in my eyes than you do. No one will ever love you the way I do.”

This book will always have an incredible hold over me. The emotions it brought out of me were so powerful, it took me a few days to really have the story copletely settle with me, and to this day, I still think about the incredible love, that is Fin and Ryan.

“I’ll love you longer than the stars that live in the sky.”

– Ryan

I would absolutely recommend this book to everyone old enough to read it. In fact if you haven’t yet read it, and it is sitting there on your TRB list, bump it to the top. You do not want to miss out on this incredible journey. You will not be disappointed.
